Intent

At Brushwood our intention is to provide children with a RE curriculum that enables them to learn about religion and from religion. We follow the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus, ensuring that it is adapted appropriately to meet the beliefs and experiences of the children represented in our school and the wider community of Chesham.

It is also our intention that, at Brushwood, the experiences of RE that children receive will prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain and the wider world. These experiences will also enhance children’s understanding and appreciation of Fundamental British Values.

Implementation

Throughout the school, RE Learning is structured into units that use a key question to form medium term plans. Teachers then use their knowledge of their pupils understanding, experience and beliefs to produce engaging lessons. To enrich our curriculum we have also weaved into our planning, plans from Kapow Primary so as to best supplement our existing planning.

Impact

Children learn about multiple religions within each topic, this ensure that their knowledge and understanding of main world religions continues to develop and grow, as they progress through the school. At Brushwood, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in RE lessons and encourage children to work individually, collaboratively and collectively within each unit. Children are encouraged to ask questions to find out information about the similarities and differences within and between religious and non-religious beliefs.

Where appropriate, educational visits to local places of worship are arranged or members of the religious community are invited in to carry out workshops. Special assemblies, activities and events are regularly organised to mark key religious celebrations within the school community.
